C3Q II Daily Dispatches From The Road- 10/1/26
REBEL RODDER (RR) ROAD DISPATCH #9:
“Between dust, distance and big skies”
DAY NINE: Thursday, October 1, 2026
4 States: 17) Nebraska, 18) Wyoming, 19) South Dakota, 20) North Dakota
Woke up at 9 am and missed the hotel continental breakfast so we went to the Country Kitchen just around the corner, Gordon's version of a Dennys. For the first time in 8 days we had a decent hot breakfast of bacon and eggs with wheat toast. It was a refreshing reprieve of barely edible hotel breakfasts. Considering the last time we were in Nebraska we posted in Carhenge, we knew we could not top that site with pictures or videos so we settled for the restaurant sign pole also off the highway so we can move on to make up time.
The next stop was the historic redwood water tank located in Lusk, Wyoming on the east edge of town. It is a giant wooden barrel measuring 25 feet in diameter and 25 feet tall, built in 1886 to supply water for steam locomotives. It lies adjacent to the railroad track and while we were there two freight trains passed by demonstrating its high traffic flow even in today's day and age.
This time to take advantage of doing the “Four Corners” (hitting four states simultaneously: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado) we had to knock out Wyoming early on the westward leg, which forced us to go southwest then travel through South Dakota again to start heading north toward North Dakota. We stopped at Hot Springs, South Dakota for a farm to table late lunch and early dinner, since it is our heavier meal we followed it with a brisk walk through town to keep my glucose in check.
We drove through the windy roads heading into North Dakota and stopped at the Frontier Travel Center where I did my last posting of the night at the adjacent gas station. When running late, you can always count on service plaza centers, welcome centers and of course, gas stations to get a receipts, witness signatures and a spray pasting, which I did by aesthetically positioning the “Reb-Rod-Mobile” just right in front of the station black plastic trash receptacle. Done. Now we will head to Miles, Montana, about 2-½ hours away to grab some shut eye.
