REBEL RODDER (RR) ROAD DISPATCH #8:

“On The Earth and Beneath the Sky”

DAY EIGHT: Wednesday, September 30, 2026

1 State: 16) South Dakota

Aside from Mt Rushmore, which we did ten years ago, we had no clue what other points of interest lay before us in South Dakota so we asked AI for help. It suggested a 50-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture of an Indigenous woman located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota called Dignity of Earth and sky. It is made of 128 stainless steel diamonds in the blue and silver colors of the surrounding water and sky. At night, LED lights illuminate the quilt. It honors the culture, heritage, and resilience of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples and serves as a symbol that all people and the land are sacred.  I strategically parked the challenger next to the most pristine pebbled trash can I have ever pasted on with the steel train and waterway in the background. Immediately after, we headed to the Mi Pueblo Mexican restaurant where we went for a late lunch and early dinner and found two witnesses to sign the log. It would be about  5 hours before we reached Nebraska and called it a day but not before witnessing the biggest sky and most beautiful sunsets we can remember from all of our travels. We were able to travel 90 mph on I-90 because the speed limit was refreshingly 80 mph.

After some long silences in the car which finally provided time to reflect upon the impacts of the delays and multiple revisions to our itinerary due circumstances beyond our control, it occurred to us that we didn't know the deadline date to beat based on the first record setting trip of 18 days 20 hours and 45 minutes. We knew how many days we needed to beat but we didn't know the actual deadline date  Monday, October 12 at 4:45 pm from first posting to last posting. However, this would not include the time duration to arrive home which would add an extra 7 hours since we will finish in Washington DC and the last state of Maryland. Despite all the delays and setbacks, we still had a shot of breaking the unofficial record that I set ten years ago and no other street artist has ever attempted to do.

Today marked a benchmark in our travels. It was the first time we broke through 629miles in 12 hours, the most we have done on this trip.
